The Boston Red Sox are still paying Manny Ramirez.
It's a fun fact, and not a new one, but an amusing one to think about for a few minutes as Boston tries to get its season moving in the right direction.
In fact, Ramirez is being paid the same contract salary in 2026 as the Los Angeles Dodgers are paying two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani this season.
And yeah, for those keeping score at home, Ramirez isn't actually playing in MLB this season.

How are the Red Sox still paying Manny Ramirez?
The Red Sox will pay Ramirez $2 million in 2026. It's the last year of deferred money on his deal that he signed before the 2001 season.
And Ohtani?
The Dodgers will pay Ohtani $2 million for the 2026 season in salary, because most of his mega contract is deferred well into the future.
Ohtani will eventually be the guy making deferred money long after he retires. For now, he's just tied with the retired Ramirez.
Not a ton of MLB deals go the deferral route, but some of the biggest money contracts incorporate it as a way to spread out financial obligations a bit.
Ramirez was worth it for Boston. He helped them break the Curse of the Bambino and win the World Series in 2004.
The Dodgers have already won the World Series twice in Ohtani's first two seasons, so they won't mind making all those deferred payments down the road, either.
Ramirez was one of the greatest hitters ever. Ohtani might be the greatest player ever thanks to his two-way prowess.
Those line items for this season are both quirky in their own way.
Manny Ramirez, $2 million from the Red Sox.
Shohei Ohtani, $2 million from the Dodgers.
Not at all equivalent in 2026 contributions, but equal in salary.
