Now that the Boston Red Sox have acquired Adley Rutschman, they have a couple hours to make another move if they want to. The only other needs they have now are getting a lefty reliever, or a depth starting pitcher.

A starter might be harder to come by now, but getting a reliever might not be that hard. There are plenty of guys on the market, but two stand out for a Red Sox team trying to contend.

Jacob Latz would be a big buy​

The biggest name they could target is Texas Rangers All-Star reliever Jacob Latz, who is having a career-defining season this year. So far, he’s posted a 2-1 record, a 1.80 ERA, 51 Ks, a WHIP of 0.660, and 21 saves in 40 games. And, according to Jon Morosi, he's on the trade block as Texas is listening to offers.

Latz also comes with three and a half years of team control, so he could cost a pretty penny. And, now that the Red Sox have traded a bunch of their top talent, it might be hard for them to afford him.

A reunion with Brennan Bernardino might be just as good​

Another possible move is reuniting with an old friend in Brennan Bernardino, who was on the Red Sox from 2023 to last season.

This year, he’s doing the best he ever has with the Colorado Rockies. He’s posted a 3-3 record, a 2.58 ERA, 34 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.169 over 52 games.

They also play at Coors Light Field, the best park for hitters, so it really speaks to how well Bernardino’s doing. Bernardino also has three and a half years of team control, but he is much older than Latz, as he’s 34 years old to Latz’s 30 years.

Time is running out​

At 6 P.M. Eastern Time, there will be no more trades until the offseason. This means Boston’s CBO Craig Breslow and the front office have a little over two hours to get something done.

If Boston truly wants to try to win it all this season, and they’ve shown in the past month that they can, getting one of these guys has to be a priority.
