The Adley Rutschman rumors floating around on Monday morning were somewhat true -- the Baltimore Orioles were dealing the catcher and designated hitter to a team in the AL East... just not the Yankees. It turned out the Boston Red Sox -- who just swung a deal for Curtis Mead recently -- was the team dealing for him.
The Red Sox continue to need the help on offense, and if Boston is contending like we think it is, then it's a necessary trade for a hitter who might be able to find his groove again with a change of scenery.
So who won and lost this deal? What are the details? Let's dive in and hand out grades for each team.
Red Sox get: C/DH Adley Rutchsman
Orioles get: RHP Anthony Eyanson, OF Enddy Azocar, RHP Kyson Witherspoon and C Carlos Narvaez
Boston needs offense. Plain and simple. Mead was a step in the right direction, but he's injured now. Enter Rutschman, who has struggled to be the star he was in 2023 and 2024. Plus, he's coming back from injury soon. So it's a bit of a swing to hope that he goes back to being an RBI machine. But the Red Sox gave up a TON of prospects for a player who might not live up to the hype as he once did. Wild! GRADE: C
It's a bummer for O's fans who loved seeing Rutschman go from No. 1 overall pick in 2019 to homegrown stud. But if you're going to give up on a young talent who didn't live up to the hype, you want to get back these kinds of young prospects. Eyanson is MLB.com's 49th-best name in all of baseball, and Witherspoon (No. 4 in the Red Sox system) and Azocar (No. 5) are all highly touted in the Boston farm system. That'll work nicely. GRADE: A-
