Red Sox Drop Update On Triston Casas After Latest Injury Setback originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox are still awaiting Triston Casas' return, but he suffered a setback that forced the Red Sox to shut him down shortly. Casas was shut down earlier this week due to an intercostal strain on his left side.
Intercostal muscles are located between the ribs, and Casas has had a rib injury in the past. In 2024, he was limited to 63 games after tearing cartilage in his rib cage. However, he will not end up being shut down for too long. The Red Sox revealed that he will start hitting again on Monday.
Casas will be hitting off a tee, however, according to MassLive's Christopher Smith.
“Kind of like start his progression again,” Cora said of Casas, per Smith on Saturday.
Casas underwent season-ending surgery last season to repair a ruptured left patellar tendon. That's the injury that has kept him on the injured list, and the injury he has been grinding to return from. However, Cora noted that he felt soreness in his ribs while swinging as part of his journey back to the field.
“He felt it, we slowed him down and now we’re back to start swinging again,” Cora said.
Casas was sensational in 2023, but has not been able to stay on the field since. He finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year race in 2023, hitting 24 home runs. When he's healthy, he could be a difference maker for the team. Casas did not appear in any Grapefruit League games, and it seems like he still has a way to go before returning to the Red Sox's lineup.
