The success of Boston Red Sox offseason trade target Wilson Contreras has put fans in an unfamiliar place: not having to worry about production out of their first baseman.
This was far from the reality at Fenway Park for several years. In both 2025 and 2024, it was first base by committee.
Triston Casas has been a part of the first base platoon for years. Casas began his career with Boston in 2022. The next year, he played 132 games, posting a respectable .263 batting average and finishing the year with a 2.2 WAR.
However, it has been all downhill for the 26-year-old since that 2023 season, as he has been unable to stay healthy.
In 2024, Casas played just 63 games as torn cartilage in his rib cage sidelined him for most of the season.
Last year, he had his season ended in the first week of May when he suffered a serious knee injury.
Casas once again hurt himself this offseason after finally recovering from the torn tendon in his knee. He is yet to make his season debut, now nearly three months removed from an abdominal strain suffered in early April.
It has been all quiet on the Casas front while the Red Sox stumbled through the first half of the season. On Monday, a rare development occurred in his recovery.
Tim Healey of the Boston Globe reported that Casas "is making his way through the early stages of a hitting progression: hitting off a tee and soft toss."
The next step in his recovery would be facing live pitching. But given how long it has been since he played competitively, he's likely a long way from returning to Fenway.
