Red Sox Announce Roman Anthony Injury Diagnosis, Return Timeline originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have not been off to the start many expected, and to make matters worse, Roman Anthony exited Monday's game early with an injury.
Anthony appeared to hurt his hand on a swing in the first inning of Monday's game, and after seeing a specialist, manager Chad Tracy announced that Anthony has a wrist sprain. As far as when he will return, Tracy noted that they are not placing him on the injured list right now, but are considering him "day-to-day."
Tracy said the Red Sox will keep an eye on him over the next couple of days and go from there. He could end up needing a stint on the injured list, but as of right now, the Red Sox think he can avoid that and be back pretty soon.
Anthony had high expectations coming into the season. He hit .292 with an .859 OPS in 71 games last season. He played in the World Baseball Classic and slashed .280/.400/.520 with two home runs and seven RBIs. He was named to the 2026 World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team.
He has not gotten off to the best start this season, however. He is slashing .229/.354/.321 with just one home run. He has been unable to carry his hot World Baseball Classic play into the regular season. He was starting to get hot before this injury. He had five hits in his last four games with two walks as well.
The Red Sox are not where they want to be as a team right now. However, if they want to turn things around, they will need Anthony to play like the star the Red Sox expect him to be.
