The Boston Red Sox have been without Roman Anthony since the beginning of May, and on Tuesday, Chad Tracy provided an update on his healing.
Anthony had an MRI at the six-week mark of his injury, and Tracy noted that he is moving in a positive direction. The MRI on the partially torn tendon in his right ring finger showed that he is healing properly, per MLB.com's Ian Browne.
"Everything looked good, healing properly," Tracy said on Tuesday, per MassLive's Christopher Smith. "That does not mean that because the picture said that that it’s like he’s hitting today. Just means that — did a follow-up at the six-week mark just to see things if things are looking good. It’s still gonna be at his progress and how he feels and the medical staff will determine each day if he’s going to swing and try and see where we’re at. And we’ll progress based on medical and his feelings. But definitely a positive step there.”
Anthony hit .292 last season before an injury ended his season early. He came back and was one of the best players in the World Baseball Classic. However, he was hitting just .229 through 30 games for the Red Sox this season. He is still regarded as one of the best young players in baseball, and the Red Sox will need him back to make a late postseason push.
Anthony will need to get on a hitting program, but expect the Red Sox to proceed with caution. He is the franchise player and has already been shut down from hitting once after his injury. He was shut down on May 28 after taking some swings and feeling discomfort.
