Roman Anthony is still on the right track after seeing Dr. Gary Lourie for a second opinion on his lingering injury.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said during his appearance on WEEI that the star outfielder had his appointment and Dr. Lourie confirmed the treatment plan Anthony has been on.
“Unfortunately, this is just an injury that’s taking longer than expected to heal,” Breslow said. “But by all accounts, it sounds like we’re on the right track.”
Anthony has been sidelined since May when he tore a ligament near the base of his right ring finger during an at-bat against the Detroit Tigers. It was originally thought he’d avoid the injured list, but the 22-year-old is now on the 60-day IL as he continues to rehab.

The Red Sox sent Anthony to Fort Myers to continue his rehab due to a crowded clubhouse with a slew of other injured players.
“We’re constantly trying to balance what is best for Roman with what is best for the 26 guys who are trying to get ready for a game,” Breslow said of the decision. “And unfortunately, the number of players on the IL has grown, but the size of the training room at Fenway Park has not. And we just kind of decided that, No. 1, it made sense for Roman to see another hand specialist in Atlanta and then from there, continue with the rehab from Fort Myers, where we’ve got all of the resources and everything that we need.”
The progression has been slowdue to the pain he continues to feel. Anthony admitted on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast that it’s been disappointing, but he is learning a lot in the process.
There is no timeline for Anthony’s return.
“Being a competitor, being a baseball player my entire life, it’s all I know,” he told WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “Just the most simple thing is that I’m not out there. And so sitting here, watching games, I’m not meant to watch games. And that’s the way I look at it. I want to be out there. I want to be helping the boys. I want to be part of it.
“I want to play baseball. I’m over sitting here and waiting on a finger,” Anthony added. “Like, it sounds ridiculous to me.”
