The Boston Red Sox signed Patrick Sandoval to a two-year deal after the 2024 season, but he did not pitch at all last season.

Sandoval is returning from left ulnar collateral ligament surgery. He had the surgery during the 2024 season, and he has not pitched in the big leagues since June 2024. He has made 100 starts in his career, but it is unlikely he joins the Red Sox's rotation. However, he could appear as a long reliever.

He was placed on the injured list before the season. He did not pitch in Grapefruit League games, but he has been throwing simulated games. Now, the Red Sox are ready to send him on a rehab assignment, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey.

According to MassLive's Christopher Smith, he will appear in a game for Double-A Portland on Sunday. It's unclear how long his rehab assignment will be, but the Red Sox will allow him to be ready before getting him back on a big league mound.

"He’s expected to pitch four innings for the Portland Sea Dogs in their 1:05 p.m. road game against the Somerset Patriots in New Jersey," Smith wrote on Wednesday.

The Red Sox could need a long relief option in the bullpen if Johan Oviedo cannot bounce back from his rough debut, or if the Red Sox think he needs to go to Triple-A to work through his velocity issues. Regardless, Sandoval is a big league arm with over 500 innings of work in the big leagues.

His rehab assignment is a major step in his long road back from injury.
