Red Sox's Sonny Gray trade plans get 'major hurdle' from MLB insider originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Are the Boston Red Sox strong postseason contenders?
Certainly not right now.
Either way, Boston's front office, specifically chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, is in a weird spot.
Should the Red Sox buy or sell at the trade deadline? The AL East club is just three games out of a Wild Card spot.
The standings may complicate right-hander Sonny Gray's future with the team, writes The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon.
"There is, however, at least one major hurdle," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote about the possibility of Gray being traded to another team. "The Red Sox may not sell.
"Boston wants to see if it could fight its way back into the playoff picture, though people briefed on the club’s thinking suggested the Red Sox will be realistic about their position as the deadline gets closer."
Before the Red Sox won 10 of their last 12 games, they were bottom dwellers in the American League.

Breslow must decide if the juice is worth the squeeze. Should the organization take a chance on their postseason hopes, or build towards future seasons?
The wrong decision may cost him his job, which is already surrounded by uncertainty.
There's a good chance that Gray could land the Red Sox at least one or two highly-touted prospects, given the excellent season he's had on the mound.
