Sonny Gray Red Sox trade deadline prediction is good news for White Sox, Braves originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Boston Red Sox might've gotten some renewed optimism this season with their four-game sweep of the New York Yankees, but still, their 37-47 record doesn't instill much confidence.

It would hardly be a surprise if the Red Sox were sellers by the 2026 MLB trade deadline on August 3. If they do sell, Aroldis Chapman is one name likely to go. But what about Sonny Gray, who has a no-trade clause?

USA Today's Bob Nightengale is predicting that the Red Sox will pay Gray $10 million for his mutual option, and then trade the starter to a new team, with two clubs: the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago White Sox, as potential destinations.

Red Sox predicted to trade Sonny Gray to new club with Braves and White Sox as landing spots

"Prediction: The Red Sox will pay his $10 million mutual option, and trade Gray to a team of his choosing, perhaps Atlanta or the Chicago White Sox, unless they somehow claw back into this weak wild-card race," Nightengale predicts.

While the Red Sox might sneak into the postseason hunt due to a very weak AL Wild Card, the more likely outcome is that Boston will be a deadline seller.

When it comes to Gray, who has a no-trade clause, he will have the option to choose his destination in the trade market. If the Red Sox do decide to sell, Gray will have some solid options.

Choosing either the Braves or White Sox, two teams that need more pitching help, would make a ton of sense as trade destinations.

If Gray's option is picked up, he could be a multi-year starter for the Braves or White Sox, which would make a trade a lot more appealing than a rental.

The right-hander is 36 years old and in the final year of a three-year, $75 million deal. But, while Gray might be a bit older and expensive, he's still a great starter.

This season for Boston, he has a 2.69 ERA with a 9-1 record with 75 strikeouts in 83.2 innings across 15 starts. He will be a hot commodity at the deadline, and Nightengale is predicting the Red Sox will actually trade him.
