It's been nearly a full month since the Boston Red Sox lost second-year star outfielder Roman Anthony to a confusing hand injury.

The Red Sox initially placed Anthony on the 10-day injured list on May 7 with a sprained ligament under his right ring finger, labelling it as a "right wrist sprain." Last week, however, the 22-year-old outfielder described it as a "partially torn ring finger ligament" during an interview with WEEI's Rob Bradford.

It appeared that Anthony was making progress in his recovery as he swung a bat for the first time last week, but was set back after still feeling discomfort in his injured hand.

MassLive's Christopher Smith reported that the young outfielder has not progressed at all since his setback and has no timeline set for taking the next step in his rehabilitation.

"Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony has still not swung a bat since last Thursday," Smith reported on Wednesday. "That’s when he felt discomfort in his injured hand when he attempted to hit off a tee. Boston did not send the 22-year-old for any additional imaging after the latest setback. No date has been set for when he will attempt to swing again."

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy further confirmed that there is no set timeline for Anthony's return and that it depends on how the young star feels moving forward.

“I think right now the time frame is when we feel like, ‘Hey, this is starting to feel pretty good, we try again,’” Tracy said, per Smith. "I don’t have a timetable on it. I just know that with this injury, we’ve gotta wait until it feels better, add more. When that feels better, you add more.

"And that’s where we’re at. And until it gets to the point where he feels healthy and he feels like his hand is healthy, then we can proceed quickly, but we have to get to that point.”

Anthony has had his fair share of struggles this season, slashing .229/.354/.321 with one home run and five runs batted in across 30 games, but remains one of the Red Sox's most promising young players. Boston could surely use his skills down the stretch as the team strives to return to the playoffs this season.
