Real Madrid has opened disciplinary proceedings into Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni after the teammates reportedly engaged in a fight that sent Valverde to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury.
Madrid announced that Valverde would miss 10-14 days with the injury, which will knock him out of Sunday's match against rival Barcelona.
"Real Madrid CF announces that, following the incidents that occurred this morning during the first team's training session, it has decided to open disciplinary proceedings against our players Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni," a club statement read on Thursday, May 7.
"The club will provide updates on the resolutions of both proceedings once the corresponding internal procedures have been completed."
Sources told Madrid newspaper Marca the incident was "the most serious ever seen in Valdebebas," the neighborhood where the team trains. Reports from Spain indicate that the midfielders got into a verbal altercation Thursday after trading brusque tackles on the training ground.
The French midfielder reportedly was ready to make up, offering the Uruguayan a handshake at the start of Thursday's training session. Valverde refused to shake his hand, however, and when the players returned to the locker room a physical altercation broke out.
Players in the locker room tried to break up the incident, and, shortly after, Real Madrid CEO Jose Angel Sanchez went to the dressing room for an emergency meeting.
"After tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury," another Madrid statement read.
"Valverde is in his residence in a good state and must stay resting between 10-14 days as the medical protocols for this diagnosis call for."
The club is preparing for a matchup with rivals Barcelona, but the training ground dust-ups have taken all the attention away from the lead-up to El Clásico.
Tensions already had been high as Real Madrid closes out a season in which Barcelona is likely to win the league title and Los Blancos were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the quarterfinal stage.
Current manager Álvaro Arbeloa will likely be replaced in the summer, with a list of rumored candidates ranging from former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho to current Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.
Superstar Kylian Mbappe's relationship with key figures in the Real Madrid setup also has been heavily scrutinized, with the France forward one of the most important keys to the team's success.
After the Clásico contest, Real Madrid has three more La Liga matches. The club sits firmly in second place, training Barcelona by 11 points but ahead of third-place Villarreal by nine.
