The Washington Commanders have added experience and depth to their secondary, agreeing to a one-year contract with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas worth up to $3.8 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Douglas, 30, enters Washington after a productive 2025 season with the Miami Dolphins, where he revitalized his career despite beginning the year in a reserve role. Initially slotted behind Jack Jones and Storm Duck on the depth chart, Douglas was thrust into the starting lineup after Duck suffered an injury in Week 1. From that point on, he never relinquished the job, finishing the season as Miami’s top cornerback.

In 15 games, Douglas was targeted 82 times and allowed 54 receptions for 515 yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded 13 passes defended, tying the second-highest single-season total of his career and demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing passing attacks.

Commanders make low-risk move

Douglas has built a reputation as a physical, instinctive defensive back throughout his career. Since entering the NFL in 2017, he has appeared in 135 career games, totaling 21 interceptions, 92 passes defended, more than 503 tackles, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. His ball-hawking ability has made him one of the league’s more productive veteran corners over the past several seasons.

The addition comes as Washington looks to bolster a defense that showed promise last season but still needed more experience and playmaking ability in the secondary. Douglas provides a dependable veteran presence capable of starting on the outside while also serving as a mentor for the Commanders’ younger defensive backs.

With training camp approaching, Douglas is expected to compete immediately for a starting role and give Washington another proven option against some of the NFL’s top receivers. If he can replicate the form he displayed in Miami last season, the Commanders may have landed one of the offseason’s better value signings.

For a team with postseason aspirations, adding a seasoned playmaker like Douglas could prove to be an important move as Washington looks to take another step forward in 2026.
