The Los Angeles Rams have built one of the more efficient offenses in football under head coach Sean McVay with quarterback Matthew Stafford under center. And in 2025, Stafford was surgical on getting the ball out on his first read.

The Rams ranked second in the NFL in quick first-read pass completions in 2025 with 199, according to Pro Football Focus, which was well above the league average of 154.97. Only the Houston Texans (225) had more. Los Angeles also ranked eighth in yards per play on those throws at 7.24, above the league average of 6.71.

Quick first-read passes are defined as throws released within 2.5 seconds of the snap. Of the 18,340 passes attempted across the league in 2025, 7,303 fell into that category. As defensive coordinators continue to blitz at higher rates out of both base and nickel packages, the ability to win consistently in the quick game has become an increasingly important marker for offensive efficiency.

The volume of quick completions the Rams generated last season reflects both Stafford's decision-making prowess and McVay's ability to get receivers open at or near the line of scrimmage. It's likely a driving reason why, even at the age of 37, Stafford was able to lead the NFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns on his way to winning the league MVP.

Los Angeles enters 2026 as a leading Super Bowl favorite. If the quick-passing numbers from last season carry over, defenses will have a difficult time slowing down an offense that already knows how to beat the blitz before it arrives.
