With the NFL preseason just around the corner, Los Angeles Ramshead coach Sean McVay finds himself pondering a familiar dilemma: how to divide snaps among his signal-callers. While one decision is already set in stone, the rest of the depth chart remains a puzzle McVay is still trying to piece together.

As expected, veteran starter Matthew Stafford will not take a single snap during the exhibition slate. The 38-year-old quarterback’s health is paramount for the Rams’ regular-season aspirations, making his absence a no-brainer. But behind Stafford, the competition is heating up, and McVay has yet to determine exactly how he will allocate the remaining reps, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN.

This situation mirrors last summer’s approach, but the faces have changed. Last year, both Stafford and then-backup Jimmy Garoppolo sat out the entire preseason. That paved the way for Stetson Bennett to take the reins, starting the first two games. The former Georgia Bulldog shined in that opportunity, tallying 512 passing yards and five touchdowns while showcasing improved decision-making under center.

Now entering his fourth NFL season, Bennett is locked in a heated battle for the crucial QB2 spot. Following Garoppolo’s departure, Bennett stepped up during organized team activities. He earned immense praise from McVay for his tremendous overall growth and stellar command of the huddle. However, he faces stiff competition from highly-touted rookie Ty Simpson, whom Los Angeles confidently selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The upcoming preseason games serve as a massive proving ground for both young quarterbacks. Bennett boasts valuable experience within McVay’s highly complex offensive system, but Simpson represents a massive draft investment and significant long-term upside.

While Stafford watches safely from the sidelines wearing a baseball cap, the fierce battle between Bennett and Simpson promises to be one of the most intriguing storylines of the Rams’ preseason. Fans will simply have to wait until game day to see who gets the very first crack tonight.
