Former Georgia Bulldogs national champion quarterback Stetson Bennett is in a training camp battle for the Los Angeles Rams' No. 2 quarterback role behind NFL MVP Matthew Stafford. Bennett has turned in an impressive showing so far and has even earned some first-team reps.
Of course, Bennett's first-team reps are a result of Stafford's maintenance plan, where he takes off some days of practice. However, they are valuable experience for Bennett in case he is needed during a regular season game.
According to Rams Wire, Bennett has the early lead for the backup quarterback role. Bennett is beating out first-round pick Ty Simpson, who played college football at Alabama.
"Stetson Bennett came in as the favorite over Ty Simpson and neither player has done anything to change that," Cameron DaSilva wrote. "Bennett is getting most of the second-team reps (and first-team reps when Matthew Stafford is out), with Simpson getting limited opportunities in practice."
Bennett has frequently found rookie wide receiver CJ Daniels, who is having a strong camp.
"He's playing the position at a high level," Rams coach Sean McVay said on Stetson Bennett. McVay also went on to praise Bennett's ability to "create off-schedule" when plays breakdown.
Bennett and Simpson may continue their competition into the preseason. Los Angeles plays its first preseason game on Aug. 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Rams are well-known for not playing starters very much during the preseason.
