Jan. 9—JAMESTOWN — Jamestown High School boy's hockey coach Jake Stilwell was expecting a hard-fought game against Mandan Friday night.
Despite a 3-0 loss, Stilwell's team met the second-year head coach's expectations.
"I thought our structure was good, I thought we battled well, we controlled play a lot of that game but sometimes the hockey gods decide that nothing is going to go in for us," Stilwell said. "That effort though — I'll take that every day of the week. That result does not reflect how we played that game at all. I liked our game a lot tonight."
The Braves shut out the Blue Jays 3-0. Jamestown's next game on the schedule is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. against Bismarck High.
Late in the first, Mandan got one of its few shots past Leif Hanson to take a 1-0 lead with 2:12 left to play. Ben Moch was credited with the score while Liam Keller picked up the assist. The Braves only recorded three shots on goal in the first 17 minutes while Jamestown put 11 on target.
Moch extended Mandan's lead to 2-0 with 45 seconds left to play in the second period. Adam Walker put the final nail in the coffin with an empty- netter scored with less than three minutes to go in regulation.
Jamestown is currently the No. 4 team in the West Region at 6-2-0. The Jays are tied with Mandan in total points at 18.
"We've played some really good hockey as of late and I don't think that was different tonight, we just hit a couple of posts, when we got traffic it came out really well, the goalie played great tonight ... but if we continue to play that kind of hockey, the outcome is going to go our way nine times out of ten. Tonight was just that one time out of ten fluke."
In total, the Jays outshot Mandan 39-17.
"Tonight, I think we deserved a better outcome but that is just the way she goes sometimes," Stilwell said. "We don't need to hang our head, we can build off of it and we get to play them again in their barn and hopefully we bring that same effort for sure."
The Jays will be back at Wilson Arena on Jan. 16 hosting Bismarck Legacy. The game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
"That's going to be a really fun one," Stilwell said. "Friday night at the John L against a top-three team in the West Region — if we can play like we did tonight, that'll be a fun one to go to for sure."
