Jan. 5—JAMESTOWN — Physics were working in Brady Nenow's favor on Monday night.
Late in the third period of the Jamestown High School boy's hockey game against Bismarck Century, Nenow, a junior for Jamestown, scooped up a turnover and rifled a shot past Bismarck Century goalkeeper Noah Hamar. The puck rattled off the post on the stick side of Hamar and ricocheted in to clinch a 2-1 win for the Blue Jays.
The one-goal game improved Jamestown's record to 6-2-0 on the year. Head coach Jake Stilwell and his squad will be back in action on Friday hosting Mandan. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.
"That felt like a playoff game," Stilwell said in a postgame interview with Jamestown's 107.1 FM. "... It was just tight. Not a lot of space for either team out there, it got a little rough, got a little spirited, got a little emotional and we've got to find a way to win those games because that is how the playoffs are going to be. It's fun to come out ahead in that one."
Century scored first on an even strength goal by Keaton Schulte at the 1:17 mark of the game. Schulte was assisted by Heath Frykman.
"Their first line got one right away but I thought we did a great job after that getting into our structure," Stilwell said. "They had a little bit of zone time after that but there weren't a lot of scary moments after that first goal. ... Kudos to our D-zone effort."
Bennett Goehner showed his athleticism in the second.
Goehner slipped on the ice, got to his feet then fed the puck out to his teammate, John Belzer, who was in front of the Century goal. Belzer buried the puck to knot the game up at one goal apiece with 13 minutes left to go in the second period.
"Benny is like a 110 pound yellow lab," Stilwell said. "He's a big body and he's never going to quit. He's reliable and he thrives in those greasy areas. He found a greasy area — Johnny was in a perfect spot ... that was a fun play."
Jamestown has now won five games in a row and snapped Century's six game winning streak but they have to keep the momentum going if they want a spot at State next month.
It starts with Mandan.
"I'm excited for that game," Stilwell said. "That is going to be a fun one. I've watched a few of their games and ... they've got a couple of kids who can really fly around and move the puck so that one's going to be a really fun one on a Friday night at John L. I'm excited for that game for sure."
