ELDON — No team gets to 24-0 without a lot of contributions.
The third-ranked (3A) Albia softball team seems to be on a mission of reminding their opponents of that as of late.
Addie Pearson continued to swing a hot bat on Thursday on Senior Night at Lizzie Alexander Memorial Field, blasting a two-run home run over the fence in the very first inning of Albia's 24th straight win. Pearson's home run, her third of the week, put the Lady Dees ahead to stay in a 6-1 South Central Conference win over Clarke.
"We've just been making really good contact with the ball," Albia junior outfielder Aliyah Hood said. "We're getting on the ball and getting on it fast to bring our energy up."
Hood set up Pearson's homer against Clarke with a two-out single to right to extend the inning. Addi Hill, one of Albia's four seniors honored before Thursday's game, continued to swing a hot bat connecting on a pair of RBI hits marking the fourth time in the last seven games that Hill has recorded multiple hits.
"I definitely saw the ball well. I knew what to expect," Hill said. "I had been in a little bit of slump, but I had the confidence that I'd know what to do to get out of it."
Grace Pence added a pair of hits, including a two-out RBI single in the opening inning to give Albia a 3-0 lead. Pence added 13 strikeouts in the pitching circle against the Indians, bringing her state-leading total to 256 for the season while allowing just her fourth run of the season
"We know, with Grace, we've got the defensive side of the ball taken care of," Hood said. "We just try to pick her up on offense and do a job."
Pence retired all 21 Davis County batters faced on Monday night, striking out 14 batters in the process. Besides a perfect night in the pitching circle, Pence delivered at the plate with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to help lift the Lady Dees to a 4-0 South Central Conference win at Lizzie Alexander Memorial Field lifting Albia to a program-best 22-0 start to the season.
Ally Batterson matched Pence, shutting out Albia on two hits over the first 5 2/3 innings. Madeline Van Loon collected three of Albia's four hits in the contest, scoring the first run of the game scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to put the Lady Dees on top.
"I feel like when we get a lead, it deflates the other team," Hood said. "When you fall behind, you have to get your bats going. For the other team, they realize they've got to get on the bats against a pitch like Grace. I know if I were facing her, I'd be a little timid."
Third-ranked (3A) Albia, now 12-0 in SCC play, heads to Washington on Saturday to face two of their toughest tests of the season. After taking on Davenport West, the Lady Dees will go up against seventh-ranked (3A) Davenport Assumption.
