MOSSYROCK — For as athletic and deep the Toledo High School girls basketball team is, one of the calling cards through 13 games is defense. Same goes for Mossyrock, a patented style of play since head coach Nick Rashoff took over last winter.
Friday's tussle featured similar styles and identities.
The Riverhawks delivered the knockout punch.
In the span of over 10 minutes from the back half of the second quarter into the opening three minutes of the third, Toledo went on a 20-0 run to turn a C2BL opener for both sides into a 55-36 rout at Mossyrock High School.
"We were able to get some easy buckets," Toledo head coach Brian Layton said. "We talk about the first four minutes of the third quarter (are) really important. You can let a team back in irt or you can control the game.
"They came out and did exactly what we wanted."
Since losing in the championship game of the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic and against a summer traveling team from Australia, the Riverhawks (10-3, 1-0 C2BL) have won three straight and all opponents have been held to under 40 points.
The combination of a full court press and half-court traps have been a thorn in their opponents' side. It allowed for guards Kailea Lairson, Sydney Kruger plus forwards Ryah Stanley and Ellie Fallon to push the pace in transition.
Of the 20 unanswered points, the only 3-pointer came from Fallon. Everything else was either from the free throw line or a lay-in.
"We didn't make stupid mistakes and we knew what we were trying to do the whole game," Lairson said.
Mossyrock (9-3, 0-1) never got into a rhythm and after only trailing by two after the opening eight minutes and taking a 17-16 lead on two Taylor Schwartz free throws, it never led the remainder of the night.
Rashoff showed plenty of emotion on the sidelines.
"All night, we looked gassed," he said. "The most disappointing thing is we got pushed around. Don't be trying to expect a foul, match the physicality and play through it. That is one of the controllables.
"We were kind of chasing all night."
At the forefront of Toledo's defense has been the pair of Lairson and Kruger. The duo have put together stat lines of multiple steals on a routine basis. It's common practice for Lairson, the All-Area MVP and C2BL Defensive Player of the Year in soccer plus she roamed the outfield for a top-three state team in softball last spring.
"Defense helps the offense," Lairson stated.
Layton admitted it's come naturally those two have found themselves as the ones causing, as he put it, "chaos." Lairson finished with four steals and six rebounds in the victory to go with her game-high 19 points.
"I played well, one of my better games," Lairson said.
Stanley added 17 points that included back-to-back triples in the fourth quarter. Fallon finished with seven points and dished out four assists. Toledo will finish up the non-league slate on Wednesday against Tenino before facing Rainier next Friday.
The sentiment shared between Layton and Rashoff is, with how deep the league is this season, there won't be an easy night.
"Enjoy this one and prepare for the next one," Layton admitted. "You got to bring it every night or you're gonna get caught. It is going to be a fun district tournament."
Taylor Schwartz and Adyson Barrows each led the Vikings with 13 points and Maci Rashoff added nine. Starting guard Kendall Cournyer rolled her ankle in their previous game and it caused Coach Rashoff to switch up rotations.
The closest they got was 13 on a little 6-0 spree in the third stanza, but never maintained that push for the rest of the second half. Mossyrock gets 2A Ridgefield at home on Monday, then the gauntlet of its schedule commences.
MWP is up first next week followed by Napavine, Toutle Lake and Adna in the span of a week.
"There's six, maybe seven, legit teams for four spots," Coach Rashoff said. "Nobody is going to take it easy on us. Our league is the toughest top to bottom in the whole state."
