TOLEDO — Adam Kruger's best moments are lengthy. He's played in Spokane Arena and Husky Stadium. He's been a staple of consistency in both football and basketball. He's one of the patented leaders for Toledo High School.

Yet his most memorable moment, one that will stick with him for life, didn't happen on the biggest stage with the brightest lights.

It was unveiled with 10 seconds left in a non-league game on Wednesday night.

Senior Carter Frye, who had never scored in his career, drained a 3-pointer from the corner to put the final touches on the Riverhawks senior night victory over Wahkiakum, 65-43 to end their non-league slate on a high note.

"One of the coolest moments of my high school career," Kruger said. "To get that, in the moment, hearing the whole (gym scream), gave me goosebumps."

Toledo head coach Grady Fallon said Frye took a couple years off from basketball, but returned to open arms from his teammates. One of five seniors on the team, Frye got in towards the very end of the game.

All the starters on the bench were yelling to give him the ball. As soon as his bucket hit nylon, the crowd erupted. Frye was mobbed by his teammates before the handshake line.

"Just a cool sports moment," Coach Fallon said. "Everybody was rooting for him. It was like slo-mo in a movie, everybody is watching."

Cooper Fallon, Eli Weeks, Trevin Gale and Kruger joined Frye in the scoring department in their final home game. They combined for 53 of Toledo's 65 points. Fallon led with an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double and Kruger added 16 points while Weeks chipped in 14.

Their first two years in the program were filled with tough moments, finishing in the middle of the pack in the C2BL. The last two have been a stark contrast.

Winning the Class 2B District 4 tournament and being a top-eight seed was the immediate sign of growth. Now, the Riverhawks are still in a dogfight for a league title and trying to defend their district crown.

And they've turned out a significant home court advantage, losing just three times in two seasons.

"We have a really good group of guys," Kruger said. "The offseason, being able to put five people together that can play (as one), is pretty fun. I'm proud of all my guys."

Wahkiakum, one of the better 1B teams and former league foe, gave Toledo (14-4) a contested bout for a half.

The Mules routinely cut the margin to a couple of possessions thanks to 3-point shooting. Parker Leitz nailed two and Jayden Stoddard unleashed a shot from beyond the arc to withstand the Riverhawks' own makes from downtown.

Toledo's largest lead in the opening two frames was seven.

"Face a little adversity and (come) together as a team," Kruger said. "Speaking for myself, I don't want to lose my last time on my court."

The momentum shifted in the third quarter, thanks to the four senior starters. They all played a part in a 9-0 run that pushed the Riverhawks cushion to double digits. It never got to under 10 points the remainder of the game.

"Man, holy crap, we have been together for so long," Coach Fallon said of his seniors.

Kruger also finished with four assists and four steals. Early on, he was a score-first point guard, but has taken his game to another level with his passing and defense. Coach Fallon has routinely praised Kruger for his growth.

"The game is coming to him," Coach Fallon said. "He's got a motor that doesn't quit."

"It is confidence," Kruger added. "I used to like, miss a shot (or) make a turnover, (like) it's the end of the world. I haven't been hitting at all this year, so to see a couple fall opened everything for me."

What remains in front of Toledo are two of the biggest games to date. Saturday, it treks to Napavine for the second meeting with the Tigers. And next Wednesday, it's the second matchup against Adna, also on the road. The Riverhawks will also take on Toutle Lake on Friday.

So long as the Riverhawks beat Napavine and don't slip up versus Rainier on Monday, they'll go into the regular season finale with a chance to snare a shared C2BL title with Adna. It's a stretch of seven games in 10 days.

"Defense is gonna win it," Kruger said.
