Pontotoc has gone on a tear over the last month.
The Warriors have won 10 of their last 11 games, with the lone loss coming against a Columbus team that’s among the best in the state. Pontotoc improved to 14-6 on the season and 3-1 in region play after beating Caledonia 81-58 on Tuesday.
“It just came to a point where we just had to kind of just trust each other and in each other’s ability,” Pontotoc head coach Rolley Tipler said. “I think that was the biggest thing. Still have somewhat of a young team, some of us had to figure some things out on the fly. Playing a pretty difficult schedule also helps out with that, too.”
Pontotoc had won six games in a row heading into the Peggy Bain Holiday Hoops Tournament right before the calendar flipped to 2026. The Warriors scored close wins over a pair of Tennessee schools (Dyersburg and Cordova) before losing 59-44 to Columbus in their next outing after the tournament.
“I think when we went to the Peggy Bain tournament for a couple days, I think that’s when everybody realized,” Tipler said. “And when we played Columbus and actually competed and didn’t get blown out of the water, with the one loss out of that 10, I think we kind of understood that maybe we can do something special, but it’s going to take a full team effort for us to do that.”
Pontotoc has won games where it has scored at will but also ones where it’s had to defend at a high level. The Warriors are finding multiple ways to win.
“That’s the thing about it, we play well as a team,” Tipler said. “Every night, it’s somebody different or it’s a different dynamic to what we’re doing. We might not score as many points one night, or one night we can score it. We might have one guy to have a good night. It’s really a compilation of things that have really helped us throughout the season at the right time.”
