SPRINGVILLE – South Pontotoc hasn’t had an easy start to the season, but the Cougars could do no wrong on Tuesday.
Led by Anniston Wiggins’ 17 kills, South Pontotoc swept the Tupelo Titans (25-14, 25-7, 25-17) at home. It was a quick turnaround for South Pontotoc after needing five sets to beat Hatley the previous night, and the Cougars’ schedule to start the year hasn’t been easy.
“At first, I thought we were going to play flat, but we didn’t,” South Pontotoc head coach Vicki Homan said. “We started picking up the pace, and I’m proud of them for that. Our legs are weary, we’re tired. We’ve played a bunch of games in the two-and-a-half weeks the season’s been open. Hopefully, once September gets here and division starts, our legs can rest a little bit and be ready for the opponents then.”
South Pontotoc (7-10-2) dominated from start to finish. The Cougars rattled off six unanswered points in the middle of the first set to open up a seven-point lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. South Pontotoc then jumped out to a commanding 14-5 lead en route to taking the second set and then won the third set to complete the sweep.
South Pontotoc’s attack had a stellar night overall, and Wiggins led the way.
“I just knew that no matter what happened, if I hit it out, if I hit it in, my teammates are going to back me up and cheer me up,” Wiggins said. “If I hit it out, they’re going to be like, ‘You got this.’ And if I hit it in, they’re going to celebrate me, and we all do the same for each other.”
“She does good hits, she does good tips,” Homan added. “She sees the floor defensively, so she knows where to try to place the ball.”
South Pontotoc's record sits at 7-8-1 on the season after sweeping Houston 3-0 on Thursday and splitting their two games in the county tournament on Saturday (lost to Pontotoc, defeated North).
