After getting knocked on the mat to start the American Legion Mid-South Regional, the Pontotoc Red Sox got up and landed big punches.
Pontotoc kept its 2025 season alive with a 13-2 win over Pittsburg (Kan.) Post 64 in the loser’s bracket on Thursday afternoon in Washington, Missouri. The Red Sox will face either Moberly (Mo.) or Columbia (Tenn.) on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
“Everybody's doing a part in here,” Pontotoc coach Scott Cummings said. “And that's kind of what you got to do when we’ve got what we got.”
A one-run double by Malachi Witcher and a one-run single by Takoda Harrell were part of a four-run top of the first for the Red Sox. Pontotoc added one run each in the third and the fourth before breaking out for three in the fifth.
Adam Smith capped off the scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh. He led Pontotoc with three RBIs and three hits. Witcher also had three hits.
“Everybody is contributing at the plate is the main thing,” Cummings said. “We're extending at-bats, we're fouling off pitches, (we’re) getting a lot of walks, getting on base, and then we're driving them in with some timely hitting.”
Jackson Harmon went the distance for the Red Sox, allowing two runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out 11.
“He was all in the zone,” ******* said. “He never really got into walking trouble, didn't hit anybody.”
Pontotoc is averaging 10 runs per game over its last five games. Cummings feels that it's a result of the team coming together at the right time.
“They're swinging with confidence, making contact with the baseball,” he said. “They cheer on each other. … I've been with a lot of teams, but this team here, man, they really get behind each other.”
