FAIRMONT — Winning three in a row is no easy task, but picking up consecutive wins against your rival certainly sweetens the deal.
Just ask the Fairmont Senior softball team, who picked up their ninth win of the season and second victory in just two days after an 11-2 rout of East Fairmont on Thursday evening.
After the first matchup between the two squads on Tuesday of this week, which was a low scoring affair and just a three point win for the Polar Bears, Thursday night’s contest had much more offensive firepower on display for a Fairmont Senior group looking to make a solid push with the regular season set to wrap up in the new few weeks.
The Polar Bears, despite scoring just one run in the first inning and going scoreless in the top of the second, began piling on runs to close out the contest early after just five total innings of play. Eight runs were scored in the top of the fourth inning alone, all but sealing the deal as the Bees struggled to keep pace.
Polar Bears’ sophomore Kylo Dodd was the only player for either side to hit a home run, a grand slam that ultimately allowed four Fairmont Senior runners to score which sparked their strong fourth inning.
Seniors Michaela Egidi and Abigail Shuck each contributed to RBIs in the contest, while freshman Talia Olivito netted three hits on four appearances at the plate and added one run to the 11 total.
On the defensive side of the field, Egidi remained a force on the mound, pitching all five innings and only gave up two runs to a depleted Bees’ offense. Egidi also picked up two strikeouts and allowed just five hits on the evening.
East Fairmont’s Gracie Snyder and Brooklynn Haddix were the only two players to score runs during the Bees’ at-bats. Starting pitcher Sophia Stevens finished the contest with two strikeouts and allowed eight hits.
In her sophomore season for Fairmont Senior, Dodd currently leads all players with two home runs on the season. She also leads the team in hits with 19 in under 20 games played to date. Olivito, who stole two bases in Thursday night’s contest, leads the team so far with 15 stolen bases in her freshman season.
With just six games left on the schedule in the regular season, the Polar Bears are currently ranked 6th in the Big X Conference with a 9-8-1 record overall and a 6-6 Big X record. In W.Va. standings, they’re ranked 65th behind James Monroe (5-12) and just ahead of Huntington High.
Following Thursday’s loss in what has been a busy week for the Bees, East Fairmont now drops to 3-12 on the season. The defeat also becomes their fifth loss in a row after a 19-0 loss to Keyser on Wednesday evening.
Fairmont Senior will return to action this evening at 6 p.m. when they travel to Buckhannon Upshur. East Fairmont will remain at home for their third straight game as they prepare to face off against Lincoln High. In a previous matchup this season, the Cougars narrowly escaped with a 13-10 victory.
