FAIRMONT — Sometimes a midseason slump is exactly what a program needs to pull themselves out of a hole. Other times, the slump continues on, even when the execution is present and the effort is there to redeem yourself.

On Tuesday, evening after dropping the last two contests and starting with just one win on the season, the Fairmont Senior girls’ lacrosse team struggled once again on the offensive end of the field and fell to Morgantown High 14-1 at East-West Stadium.

The Mohigans were able to execute a flawless offensive game plan from the opening minutes, ultimately jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first quarter after scores from Bailley Howell and Addy Zizzi, including a shot from Howell after a fight for a loose ball that ended up sailing into the back of the net.

The Polar Bears, playing without standout Ayla Lilly after the sophomore exited the previous contest against University High with an injury, struggled to contain time of possession and took a significantly less number of shots in comparison to Morgantown’s highly touted offensive unit.

Giana Gerard would have the lone goal for Fairmont Senior after weaving through defenders and nailing a strike straight past the Mohigans’ goalie, but it would be all Morgantown the rest of the way as multiple players were able to get in on the action.

Morgantown would pick up in the second quarter right where they left off in the first after zig-zagging through multiple Polar Bear defenders to bounce the ball straight past the defensive line to add to the Mohigans’ lead. From there, they would score on their next three possessions before the end of the half, as Howell would add one more goal to her night, also marking her 28th goal of the season thus far.

At the end of the first half, Fairmont Senior’s offense had just three shot attempts with one goal in comparison to Morgantown’s 21 shot attempts and six goals.

In the second half, the Mohigans would continue to limit the Polar Bears’ chances on the offensive end while claiming the majority of time of possession. Without the presence of Lilly, a young Polar Bears’ unit was unable to find a rhythm and failed to convert on any opportunities after advancing past the stifling Morgantown defense.

Following the win Tuesday evening, Morgantown now moves to 5-5 on the season and will advance to take on a high powered University High offense on April 17. Fairmont Senior drops to 1-5 and 0-4 in the WVSLA Division. They will face off against George Washington Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
