Wow... new details being released:

.......security experts discovered discussions on forums that talked about how the PSN's security was lacking. He said that the threads revealed that the network was using old versions of the Apache Web server software, which "was unpatched and had no firewall installed."

it's inexcusable that Sony not only ran obsolete software on servers containing confidential data, but also that the company continued to do so after this information was publicly disclosed," said
Consumer Reports technology editor Jeff Fox.

I think this has merit...good point.

Still, i refuse to pay for an online gaming service after i've already:
1) Spent hundreds on the console
2) Spend $60 a pop for newly released games
3) Spend money for DLC
4) And the biggest reason.....i'm already spending monthly for internet service in general.

Paying to play online is ignorant.

I happily pay for the service and find it far superior to other services and well worth my money. If you time it right you end up paying 50% of the actually yearly bill too. To keep my servers up always, have lag free everything and one central server, constant upgrades and smooth working everything I am all for it.

Even if I pay 50 bucks, thats less than 5 bucks a month, Id pay more.

The real scam is EA charging per game to play online.

Here's something new, details on the credit-monitoring aspect of Sony's "make good" promises:

Sony Offering Free ‘AllClear ID Plus’ Identity Theft Protection in the United States through Debix, Inc.

The part of about it that is a joke is "identity restoration specialists." What they don't tell you is that this process to "restore" your identity can take years. My brother had this protection service, had his ID stolen and 1 and 1/2 years later is still trying to get things straightened out.

A friend of his that had his information compromised at the same time had a different ID protection service and is in the exact same boat.

That's been my impression of fraud protection companies as well. The service you pay for really doesn't do much, but people think it does.

Nearly three weeks now. :grabs:
I'm still of the opinion that says: Let them take as much time as need be to rebuild the network in order to secure, and improve it.

However,i still can't believe just how piss-poor Sony's initial PR response and subsequent update's have been....just awful. Its now been another 4 days without a peep from Sony.

Even a daily "fluffy" statement would be appropriate here.

I did fine w/out my online gaming fix for the first 2 weeks....but now....:pullhair:

I'd kill to play some COD:Blk Ops online right now...and i cant stand COD.:)

Actually, it has been 3 weeks. 21 days to be exact. I'm very close to being done with Playstation and Sony in general. This is by far the worst example of PR I've ever run across. Sony is going to have to do some major league butt kissing to keep people from leaving. And giving a free month of something I neither want or need isn't going to cut it.

Now they are estimated that the PSN outage could cost both Sony, Game partners and PSN partners billions when all is said and done. The lost revenue goes beyond just Sony. They are even speculating that some struggling game companies or PSN partners could launch a multitude of lawsuits against Sony to recover revenue losses.

This is far from over and if partners start suing Sony over this, it's going to be one of the biggest black eyes in gaming history (some say it already is). Sony needs to start talking to it's partners now and offering something up behind the scenes to avoid this from spiraling out of control.

Playstation Network up by the End of May

Wow...the only way this could be worse for Sony, at this point, is if PSN never came back up.
Ken,this link is hopefully more accurate....considering its coming from an official Sony website dated today.
From Patrick Seybold,Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media:
I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.

If we're talking May 31st....i think that would absolutely bury Sony six feet under. Its already been WAY too long....i would be shocked if we're talking another 3 weeks to get the network back up.

It's tough for me to trust the official word from Sony.

One thing I've learned from the years I've played SOE products (I first started with Star Wars: Galaxies back in 2003) is that Sony cannot be trusted with the truth.

It's not a dig on Sony, just on the Japanese version of American corporate culture.

When things get better, or worse, it's the paying customer that will be the last to know.

I agree. I don't know how they could recover from a 6-week shutdown of online services.

And so it begins.........

Christian Svensson of Capcom has weighed in with his thoughts on the lengthy PSN downtime. Firstly, he noted that he has frustrated and upset over the downtime. On a personal level he is annoyed because hsi personal data has been compromised. But on a business level, things are more serious as the downtime is allegedly costing Capcom 'millions of dollars' in revenue'.

Hopefully sony catches the hackers responsible somehow, and gets their online service backup soon :). Sorry ps3 owners must really stink not having online but it will get handled soon i'm sure.

Soon. This is the same **** and bull story we've been hearing from Sony from the beginning. But to clarify, the SOE problem and the PSN problem are 2 different issues. That said, this is getting closer and closer to driving me over the edge. I may never buy another on line game again. I'm not real cool on paying for a service that's due to run out in a week and I haven't played it in 3 weeks. And it saddens me because I was enjoying DCUO.

inorite?

They are doling out a free month to those who pay for their various online services, plus 1 day for every day servers remain down.

If SOE brings things back up on the 31st (as it is rumored to be doing at this point) that should work out to 2 months and 10 days of credit toward our DCUO subscriptions.

However, it still sucks donkey bawls that we can't play.

How come you don't play online Gee? Thats pretty much all I do since most games I play only take a lil while to beat offline. Sports games I don't play much online though.

I dunno.. I really dont play games all that much to begin with.. And whenever I play online with random people that play all the time, I get destroyed at whatever game it is.. I think they have cheat codes or something, so I dont find it much fun.. I will play online against friends though..
