It took all four quarters, but the Adna High School boys basketball team escaped by a thread in executing a second half comeback to beat Onalaska 61-55 in a C2BL contest at home on Tuesday night.
Trevin Salme erupted for a game-high 29 points while the rest of the Pirates (4-0, 4-0 C2BL) combined for 32. The junior scored 22 in the final two frames and 15 in the fourth. They were down six after the first and trailed by a possession at halftime.
Grayson Humphrey was Adna's next highest scorer with eight points. It shot 19-of-39 from the field, but only 11-for-25 from the free throw line. The Pirates will have over a week off before playing their first non-league game versus Tumwater.
"Good teams find a way to win games like tonight," Adna head coach Luke Salme said. "(Onalaska) played us very tough tonight, like I figured they would."
Maddox McKinley led the Loggers (1-4, 1-4) with 20 points while Austin Sturza recorded 15. They made only six trifectas in 25 attempts and shot seven free throws on the night. They will take on Mossyrock in another league tilt on Friday.
"Defensively, it was our best effort of the season," Onalaska head coach Fred Sturza said. "In the end, not blocking out and poor execution on offense did us in. Proud of the effort."
