The Pirates opened the baseball season on the road at EIAC foe Lawrenceburg Monday. Greensburg pounded out nine hits and the Pirates’ pitching held the Tigers to just two hits en route to a 2-0 victory.

Greensburg got things going right away as Ethan Smith opened the game with a single to center field. Unfortunately, Smith was left at third as the Tigers got out of the inning.

In the top of the second, Jacoby Miller reached on a 1-out single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Logan Meyer drew a walk. With two outs, Chase Tekulve doubled to left field to score Jacoby Miller and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Greensburg starting pitcher Lance Coy struck out the side in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, Greensburg added an insurance run. Smith singled to right field and went to second on Caleb Greiwe’s single to center. With one out, Smith took third base, and Cy Miller drove him in with a single to left field to give Greensburg a 2-0 lead.

Those two runs were more than enough for Coy and relief pitcher Luke Hoeing. Coy pitched 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks while striking out seven. Hoeing pitched 3.2 innings allowing no runs, no hits and no walks while striking out three.

Offensively for the Pirates, Smith had two hits, a stolen base and a run scored. Tekulve added a double and an RBI. Cy Miller had a pair of singles and an RBI. Jacoby Miller singled and scored one run. Greiwe, Chase Walsman and Joey Everroad all had a single for the Pirates.

The Tigers visit Greensburg at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
