The Pittsburgh Penguins could make a splash on the trade front.

Pittsburgh made the playoffs last season and re-signed Evgeni Malkin, which signals the team will look to compete again next season. Ahead of the offseason really kicking off, it was reported that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse has requested a trade.

Not only has Nurse requested a trade, but he has a full no-movement clause, so he has a say over what team he will be willing to go. NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the Penguins are among the teams on that list.

“Nurse and the Oilers spoke after the season and it became clear, at that point, that a change of scenery was inevitable,” Pagnotta wrote. “Fast forward to early-June and another discussion between the two sides, which has led to a reported trade request, as pointed out by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman earlier today.

“According to Friedman and Mark Spector, the Nurse camp have given the Oilers a list of three-to-five teams he would waive his no-movement clause for. As per sources, TFP has learned the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings are two teams he would be willing to sign off for, and the connections seem clear as to why. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas was Nurse’s GM in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, while Kings GM Ken Holland was the man who signed him to his eight-year, $74 million contract in August 2021.”

Nurse has four years left on his eight-year, $74 million deal and if the Penguins do trade for him, he would help bolster the blue line.

Yet, whether or not he fits on the Penguins blue line with Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson, already making plenty of money and being offensive defensemen, is uncertain.

Nurse recorded seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points in 82 games last season.
