Penguins could trade for Darnell Nurse from Oilers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have an aging roster, led by Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.

They may be looking add another veteran, Darnell Nurse, from the Edmonton Oilers.

Nurse recently requested a trade, and now he's been linked to the Penguins.

"As per sources, TFP has learned the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings are two teams he would be willing to sign off for, and the connections seem clear as to why," NHL insider David Pagnotta wrote on Thursday. "Penguins GM Kyle Dubas was Nurse’s GM in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, while Kings GM Ken Holland was the man who signed him to his eight-year, $74 million contract in August 2021."

Nurse is under contract through 2029-30, and he has a $9.25 million annual cap hit.

Any team that trades for Nurse will want the Oilers to retain some of his salary. The former team can keep up to half a salary on their own books.

If Edmonton is willing to do that, it'll be a lot easier to trade Nurse.

The Philadelphia Flyers have also been linked to Nurse in a separate report.

Nurse is still a quality defenseman, although not one worth his entire salary.

The Penguins certainly have some of those pricy veteran contracts already on the books, so they'd have to work to figure this out.

It could work out, though, as a change of scenery might be exactly what Nurse needs.
