The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a frustrating 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

Paul Skenes took the mound and he went six innings, allowing two runs, while he walked two and also hitting two batters. After the loss, Skenes said he didn’t have the command he wanted, but he also said he was trying to pitch lower in the zone in Denver’s elevation.

“I didn't want to throw the ball into the hitter's feet, but the ball just wanted to go there instead of the strike zone sometimes,” Skenes said postgame on Saturday. “Obviously hit a couple guys, walked a couple guys. Just command overall wasn't great. Wasn't getting ahead of guys. You're going to have those outings. Just kind of throw everything out the window and figure out how to get outs.”

Although Skenes wasn’t too happy with his outing, Pirates manager Don Kelly said it shows how good he is, as his bad starts are still dominant.

“It just speaks to the talent he’s got, and expectations that are a little bit elevated for him,” Kelly said. “And he set that bar with what he did the first two years. And there’s nobody that expects more out of Paul Skenes than Paul Skenes expects out of himself. … And when we talk about his ‘down’ starts, they’re still pretty good.”

However, despite another dominant outing from Skenes, the Pirates have now lost seven consecutive starts by Skenes.

With the loss, the Pirates fell to 38-39 and will look to avoid being swept on Sunday at 3:10 p.m. ET.
