One of the more unexpected college football stories to emerge this week was the Bill Belichick retirement watch. Rumors have suddenly surfaced that he could be considering retirement, and his first season as the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels was underwhelming, to say the least.
Now, a prominent college football analyst has sent him a clear message: call it a career.
Paul Finebaum joined Get Up on ESPN and shared his thoughts on the rumors. Needless to say, he did not hold back.

“Ending like he is going to end is really embarrassing and sad and … pathetic,” Finebaum said. “This didn’t have to happen. He only took this job because he was bitter he couldn’t get an NFL job. He chose the wrong place … he should seriously consider retirement.”

Belichick took the UNC job in 2025 after the Atlanta Falcons passed on hiring him in 2024. He and the New England Patriots agreed to part ways following a disastrous 2023 season. However, things were not always that bleak, even just two years after Tom Brady left.
In 2021, the Patriots drafted Mac Jones and made the playoffs. It appeared they had found their next quarterback, and Belichick seemed like he would remain in New England for the foreseeable future. However, the 2022 and 2023 seasons showed that it was time for the Patriots to consider moving on.

Although he guided New England to six Super Bowl titles, the NFL is relentless. It is very much a “what have you done for me lately” league. Belichick is one of the greatest coaches of all time, but even legends can find themselves passed over by the game.

Now, Belichick is in an environment where, frankly, he appears out of place. He was never expected to be an effective college football coach, especially in the current era of NIL and transfer portal chaos.
There is no denying Belichick’s football mind is exceptional. However, the game has changed, and the sun may have already set on his coaching career.
