Even with a disappointing first season as UNC's head football coach in 2025, Bill Belichick is still the GOAT, a moniker he earned from winning eight Super Bowls.
Belichick won his first two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, then six more as head coach of the New England Patriots. Despite mutually agreeing to part ways with New England after its 2023-24, Belichick still had a desire to coach professional football.
Turns out, that desire was mutual. According to a recent report by ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham, current Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton wanted Belichick to become head coach in the Mile High city.
The report alleges that Payton wanted Belichick to coach Denver until he won 15 games, enough to break Don Shula's all-time NFL wins record of 347.
Belichick currently has 333 NFL victories, so 15 more seem well within reach. North Carolina currently has Belichick signed to a 5-year deal, but if the 2026 campaign ends poorly, there's a chance both parties separate and Belichick chases that NFL record.
The Tar Heels hired Belichick for his ability to win in the pros, but that NFL success didn't translate to Chapel Hill in Year One. Belichick now has a full offseason under his belt, though, so 2026 should be a noticeable improvement.
Can you imagine that, if Payton submitted this proposal to the Broncos, Belichick stays in the NFL? What do you think UNC would do if it lost out on Belichick?
