As expected, the Carolina Panthers won't be putting their best out on the field in Canton, Ohio later this week.
The reigning NFC South champions will help kick off the preseason on Thursday night, as one half of this summer's Hall of Fame Game. But don't count on seeing any of their top players suit up against the Arizona Cardinals.
"Kenny [Pickett] will start the game off," head coach Dave Canales said on Monday of his quarterback decision for the preseason opener. "For how long? I'm not sure. But we have a good number of guys that'll be helping out early in the game—just because we don't wanna overload any one particular group on our team. We do have practices leading into the game and we do have practices coming out of it."
Pickett joined the Panthers on a one-year deal this past spring to serve as the backup to Bryce Young. The 2022 first-round pick, who is in his fifth NFL stop in as many seasons, has made 27 regular-season starts over 36 games.
Behind Pickett is undrafted rookie signee Haynes King. King, the 2025 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, split his six-year collegiate career between Texas A&M (2020 to 2022) and Georgia Tech (2023 to 2025).
Canales then confirmed that he won't be fielding any starters.
"There are some competition battles for starting positions, where guys will have an opportunity to play a little bit," he added. "Some of the guys we're expecting to be out there right off the bat, I think we won't play those guys in this game."
Thursday night's matchup with the Cardinals will be the first of four summer exhibitions for the Panthers. They'll also be facing the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 15, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 21 and the Houston Texans on Aug. 28.
