Why Carolina Panthers haven't added another quarterback
The Carolina Panthers are set to play in their first preseason game of 2026 on Thursday, facing off against the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game. It will help kickoff not only the preseason schedule but the ceremonies for the Hall of Fame Weekend.
As Carolina rolls on with training camp, Dave Canales and the staff are learning more about their team. The first team offense likely won't play on Thursday night but instead will likely play in the next preseason game.
So there should be plenty of reps to go around.
At the quarterback position, the Panthers have had three quarterbacks in training camp as Will Grier opted to retire right before they reported. While Carolina could have looked to sign a fourth quarterback, they haven't just yet. They did have Kyle Trask in for a workout earlier in the week but there hasn't been a signing as of yet.
But there's a reason why. Canales spoke to reporters on Friday night after the team's Fan Fest event. He was asked about the quarterback position and offered up this answer about a fourth quarterback on the roster.
"Yeah, just general needs for our roster right now," stated Canales, who later mentioned the offensive line and tight end room as areas that are currently experiencing stress. "We just didn't really feel like we had the luxury. With a couple of positions, we have some guys down."
The Panthers know that Bryce Young will be their starter and behind him they have Kenny Pickett and Haynes King. It's likely that Pickett will be the backup barring a charge by King in the preseason. But if the roster allows it, adding someone like Trask may not be a bad thing.
Right now, it's a numbers game as the Panthers have been hit hard with injuries here in training camp. At quarterback, they have enough to get through the preseason so it's a position that they really don't want to add to in this type of situation.
It's certainly something to monitor moving forward as preseason and training camp roll on.
