An NFL general manager's work is never done.
Carolina Panthers president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan joined 99.9 The Fan's The Drive with Tim Donnelly on Wednesday. While chatting about his haul from the 2025 NFL draft, specifically fifth-round pick Lathan Ransom, Morgan was asked if the team is still on the lookout for a free safety.
"Yeah, we're definitely gonna explore some guys that are still out there," he replied. "But drafting a guy like Lathan, I just think he brings that demeanor and that mentality that we're looking for—that physical presence out there, that tone-setter-type mentality.
"And I think a lot of people think that Tre'von [Moehrig] is just really a box guy. But he actually is a really good deep player too and a guy that we feel like can play center field, half field and do a lot of things from the backend as well. So, I think that we have a lot of versatility back there, a lot of guys that are smart and can do a lot of things. But that won't exclude us from trying to add somebody else."
Moehrig, who joined the Panthers on a three-year, $51 million deal out of free agency, played primarily from the box during his career campaign in 2024. He did, however, play 2,220 of his 3,225 defensive snaps (68.8 percent) on the backend through his first three NFL seasons—potentially affording some versatility, as Morgan stated.
Outside of Moehrig, the only other safeties on the roster are his likely backup in Ransom, Demani Richardson and Nick Scott.
As for who's out there on the open market, Julian Blackmon and Marcus Williams—both of whom visited with the Panthers back in late March—could still be on Morgan's radar.
