The San Diego Padres won a back and forth battle against the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-3, as they rallied for a pair of runs in the 11th inning to complete the victory and sweep the series.
The Brewers got on the board first with a run in the second and another in the third off starter Robbie Ray, who definitely wasn’t at his best in this one as he struggled with his command and control. Gary Sanchez got to Ray with a solo homer in the second, and Milwaukee got the second run on a walk to Joey Ortiz, a groundout by Jackson Chourio and an RBI single by Brice Turang to make it 2-0.
Brewers starter Dustin May can be a bit of a wild card on the hill, but when he’s on he can be close to unhittable, and that was the case today. The Padres got shut down almost completely for the first seven innings, with the lone meaningful exception being a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts in the fourth.
The Padres finally got May out of the game in the eighth as he stumbled and walked Gavin Sheets to open the inning. That brought on reliever Chad Patrick, who got a double-play ball from Bogaerts, but Patrick pitched around pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. with a walk. Luis Rengifo also walked, but Milwaukee brought in Alan Ashby to get the lefty-lefty matchup against Jake Cronenworth.
Cronenworth bounced a ground ball to first, but Ashby was late covering, and Tatis raced home from second as Cronenworth beat the toss from first baseman Trevor Bauers.
The infield hit tied the game at 2-2 to ruin May’s effort, and it brought on Mason Miller to pitch a scoreless ninth. Closer Trevor Megill came on to do the same, although both teams briefly threatened, and that sent the contest to extra innings.
Milwaukee tried to use the element of surprise in the tenth as ghost runner Brice Turang attempted to steal third, but catcher Luis Campusano gunned him down with a great throw for the first out. Reliever Adrian Morejon then struck out Luis Lara, and he got a fly ball to center to end the inning without a run scoring. The Padres couldn’t counter against Megill, though, and the game went on to the 11th.
The Brewers broke through against Morejon in the 11th on a double by Sanchez that scored ghost runner Jihwan Bae to make it 3-2. Morejon then got out of a jam by striking out the side to give the Padres a chance.
Antonio Senzatela came on for the Brewers, and the Padres managed to tie the game as Manny Machado grounded out to get Cronenworth, the ghost runner, to third. Jackson Merrill then got the tying run home on a sacrifice fly to right that almost became a game winning base hit. Pinch-runner Sung-Mun Song then scored from second when Luis Campusano singled home the winning run to make it 4-3 and give the Padres the series sweep.
It was an epic effort by a team that’s been hot of late, and San Diego took sole possession of the second wild-card spot as the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks both lost.
