The San Diego Padres got their third straight win over the Miami Marlins, 5-3, as they swept the series with a late rally to pass the Marlins in the wild card race as they continue to climb in the standings.
The Marlins got on the board first in the second inning off starter Walker Buehler, thanks to two walks and some sloppy Padres defense. The walks put runners on at first and second, and lead runner Liam Hicks had third base stolen when catcher Luis Campusano threw the ball into left field and make it 1-0. A base hit by Graham Pauley scored another run to double the lead and put the Padres behind early by a 2-1 count.
Maimi upped the lead to 3-0 via a solo homer from Kyle Stowers, but Manny Machado got San Diego on the board with an RBI double in the fifth off Marlins starter Janson Junk, as he drove home Jake Cronenworth after a Cronenworth base hit.
That made it 3-1, and Buehler was solid into the sixth as he held the line until the bullpen could arrive. His final line was 5-1/3 innings with three runs, two earned, as he gave up four hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts.
That score held until the eighth inning, when the Padres finally broke out in a big way against reliever Lake Bachar of the Marlins. The first two runs came on a Cronenworth single followed by a Machado homer, and Jackson Merrill followed with a solo shot to get a third run home. Luis Rengifo then doubled, and Luis Campusano singled him home to make it a four spot and give the Padres a 5-3 lead.
The sequence of relievers was Yuki Matsui, Wandy Peralta and Adrian Morejon, and they all did he job to deliver scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth. That set up Mason Miller to finish things off, and Miller made it business as usual to get his 27th save of the season and send the Padres back home with another impressive victory, as Peralta got the win due to the late rally.
The win allowed the Padres to finish the trip at 5-5, but more importantly it helped them jump the Marlins in the standings as Miami has now last 12 straight. The Padres ended the game 2.5 games out in the wild card pending late results.
