The NFL definitely stands for Not For Long, and Jonathan Gannon was able to quickly regroup after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals following three losing seasons in the desert. Gannon was 15-36 with no playoff appearances during his three seasons in Arizona.

Following a 17-point defeat to the Rams in Week 18, the Cardinals finished the season with nine consecutive losses. It's a dramatic fall for the hard-nosed, edgy, defensive-minded head coach who accompanied Nick Sirianni to Philadelphia and turned the Eagles' defense into a top-five unit. Yet, it was passive in the most significant moments.

Now, Gannon will take his defensive acumen to Green Bay as the Packers defensive coordinator.

Gannon never reached the playoffs and never finished higher than third in the NFC West. Arizona went 4-13 in 2023 to finish last in the division and 8-9 last season to finish third. Even worse, Gannon was 3-15 against the NFC West -- 2-4 against the 49ers, 1-5 against the Rams, and 0-6 against the Seahawks. The three other teams in the division all made the playoffs, magnifying his struggles, and the Cardinals' 2025 season included losing streaks of five and nine games.

For Eagles fans, Gannon will be most remembered for not getting on a plane back to Philadelphia after the team's 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Gannon accepted the Cardinals' job under suspicious circumstances. Gannon initially said he would remain the Eagles' defensive coordinator, even after interviewing for the Texans' head coaching position, before Houston hired DeMeco Ryans.

Head coach Nick Sirianni initially said he was prepared to lose both coordinators. Still, according to Albert Breer of The Monday Morning Quarterback, the Eagles had been making a full-court press to retain their defensive coordinator.

In his first season as defensive coordinator, Gannon's Eagles' defense surrendered 5.2 yards per play, tied for the seventh-fewest in the league. The Eagles were tied with the Bears and Panthers for the fifth-fewest takeaways in the NFL with 16.

In his final season with the Eagles, Gannon's defense was among the top units in the NFL, finishing No. 2 overall in total defense, No. 1 against the pass, and 8th in points allowed, but it fell apart in the second half of the Super Bowl loss.
