GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers reportedly will hire ex-Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as their defensive coordinator.
Gannon comes to Green Bay after three seasons as head coach at Arizona.
Here’s what to know about the Packers’ new defensive coordinator:
Gannon is 43 years old
He played at the University of Louisville from 2001-02 before suffering a career-ending injury and then became a volunteer/defensive assistant during the 2003-06 seasons.
He coached with the Atlanta Falcons (2007), Tennessee Titans (2012-13), Minnesota Vikings (2014-17), Indianapolis Colts (2018-20) and Philadelphia Eagles (2021-22) in various defensive roles, including defensive coordinator with the Eagles. He also worked with the Rams as a scout from 2009-11.
Gannon’s first head-coaching job came with the Cardinals.
Gannon has two seasons of experience as defensive coordinator during his time with the Eagles.
In Gannon's first season in Philadelphia in 2021, the Eagles' defense surrendered 5.2 yards per play, tied for the seventh-fewest in the league, and were tied for fifth-fewest takeaways in the NFL with 16.
In his final season, they were among the top units in the NFL, finishing No. 2 overall in total defense, No. 1 against the pass, and eighth in points allowed. The Eagles made it to Super Bowl LVII, but lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gannon went 15-36 with Arizona and never made it to the postseason. He was fired Jan. 5.
Gannon and Packers coach Matt LaFleur have experience coaching against each other. In addition to Gannon’s time in Philadelphia, the two went head-to-head twice during Gannon’s three years in Arizona.
In 2024, the Packers beat the Cardinals 34-13 at Lambeau Field and this past season Green Bay won in Arizona 27-23.
