The Oregon Ducks have been watching 5-star quarterback Will Mencl closely in the 2027 recruiting cycle, and the program's efforts could pay off very soon.
Mencl is the nation's top passer and the top player in Arizona, according to Rivals, standing at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds. The Ducks have been heavily involved in Mencl's recruiting process and continue to be in good standing with the Chandler quarterback, despite the departure of offensive coordinator Will Stein during the offseason.
However, since Mencl picked up his fifth-star from Rivals after playing in the 2026 Navy All-American Bowl in January, the secret is out, and the competition for his recruitment is picking up.
Mencl confirmed to Rivals that he is taking a trio of unofficial visits soon that will impact his decision. He will visit Auburn in late March and then take visits to Penn State and Miami the following week.
Oregon's early offer to Mencl could give them a leg up on the competition, and the Ducks could use it. With Dante Moore likely to depart for the NFL after the 2026 season, the Ducks will be wide-open to quarterbacks looking to fill the starting role. Dan Lanning has proven he's not afraid to play freshmen, and could extend to Mencl in Eugene.
After his three visits, Mencl suggested a commitment could be on the horizon.
“I kind of want to be committed after coming out of these visits," Mencl told Rivals. "So I’d say, like, mid to late April, but obviously if it doesn’t feel right, I don’t want to turn off anyone."
The Ducks still appear to be the front-runners for Mencl and will hope to get him on campus frequently this fall.
