BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Erie SeaWolves are one win away from a third straight Eastern League championship after a dominant effort in Game 1 on Sept. 21.
The team broke franchise records in runs and hits during a 14-5 win over Binghamton at Mirabito Stadium. The series shifts to UPMC Park on Sept. 23 at 6:35 p.m. The SeaWolves need one more win to clinch the Eastern League Championship Series. If Binghamton wins Game 2, there will be a third and deciding game in the series on Sept. 24 at UPMC Park at 6:35 p.m.

The SeaWolves jumped on the Rumble Ponies right away as No. 1 Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle crushed a two-run home run in the first inning. McGonigle also tripled and singled to finished with three hits and scored three runs. His eight total bases is a new SeaWolves playoff record.
John Peck hit a home run in the second inning and another in the ninth to finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. He became the third player in SeaWolves playoff history to hit two home runs in a game along with Chris Meyers in Game 2 of the 2023 division series and Jake Holton in Game 2 of the 2023 championship series.
Binghamton was able to close the gap to 6-3 after six innings before the ‘Wolves scored twice in the seventh inning and tacked on six runs in the ninth inning.
Max Clark, Josue Briceno, Meyers and Ben Malgeri all had two hits as Erie finished with a playoff-record 16 hits. Meyers and Malgeri also drove in two runs apiece.
Max Alba allowed just one run in four innings as the string of starting pitching has been solid for the SeaWolves in three straight games before Carlos Silva tossed 2 2/3 innings to get the win. Trevin Michael, Andrew Magno and Ryan Boyer combined to throw 2 1/3 innings to close out the win.
The SeaWolves send Garrett Burhenn to the mound on Sept. 23. Burhenn led the Eastern League with 13 wins this season. He allowed five runs, four earned, to lose Game 1 of the division series. Binghamton sends right-handed pitcher Will Watson to the mound. Watson is the No. 11 prospect for the New York Mets. He was a seventh-round pick by the Mets in the 2024 draft out of USC. The SeaWolves did not face Watson this season.
There have been just three franchises to win three straight Eastern League championships. The Springfield Giants won three in a row from 1959-61 and the Vermont Reds won three in a row from 1984-86. The Harrisburg Senators won four in a row from 1996-99. The SeaWolves need one more win to join the club after sweeping Binghamton in 2023 and Somerset in 2024.
