BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Rumble Ponies' Eastern League championship hopes now move to Erie, PA after a series-opening loss.

The Rumble Ponies fell to the Erie SeaWolves, 14-5, in Game 1 on Sept. 21 in front of an announced crowd of 2,930 fans at Mirabito Stadium.

The SeaWolves are one win away from a third straight championship after their dominant effort.

Erie broke franchise records in runs and hits during its victory. The series shifts to UPMC Park at 6:35 p.m. Sept. 23. If Binghamton wins Game 2, there will be a third and deciding game at 6:35 p.m. Sept. 24.

How the SeaWolves gained control in Game 1​


The SeaWolves jumped on the Rumble Ponies right away as No. 1 Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle crushed a two-run home run in the first inning. McGonigle also tripled and singled to finished with three hits and scored three runs. His eight total bases is a new SeaWolves playoff record.

John Peck hit a home run in the second inning and another in the ninth to finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. He became the third player in SeaWolves playoff history to hit two home runs in a game.

Binghamton was able to close the gap to 6-3 after six innings before the ‘Wolves scored twice in the seventh inning and tacked on six runs in the ninth inning.

Max Alba allowed just one run in four innings as the string of starting pitching has been solid for the SeaWolves in three straight games before Carlos Silva tossed 2 2/3 innings to get the win.

Eastern League championship Game 2 pitching matchup​


Binghamton sends right-handed pitcher Will Watson to the mound for Game 2. Watson is the No. 11 prospect for the New York Mets. He was a seventh-round pick by the Mets in the 2024 draft out of USC. The SeaWolves will start Garrett Burhenn, who led the Eastern League with 13 wins this season. He allowed five runs, four earned, to lose Game 1 of the division series.

How Binghamton has fared in Eastern League championship series​


Binghamton won its first Eastern League championship in 1992, in the B-Mets inaugural season at NYSEG Stadium. A championship followed two years later and the Mets' last title came in 2014. The team was renamed the Rumble Ponies in 2016.

The Rumble Ponies' 90-46 regular-season record this season gave them the third-best winning percentage in Minor League Baseball.

SeaWolves chasing history​


There have been just three franchises to win three straight Eastern League championships. The Springfield Giants won three in a row from 1959-61 and the Vermont Reds won three in a row from 1984-86. The Harrisburg Senators won four in a row from 1996-99. The SeaWolves need one more win to join the club after sweeping Binghamton in 2023 and Somerset in 2024.
