A back-and-forth affair in Omaha, Nebraska, turned away from the Saints late on Tuesday night.
Omaha scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat St. Paul 6-3 in the opener of the six-game series. Walker Jenkins and Aaron Sabato each had two hits for the Saints.
The Storm Chasers’ late surge came against St. Paul reliever Marco Raya (4-5). Raya allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings.
Ricky Castro started on the mound for the Saints, giving up two runs in three innings.
St. Paul’s Kyler Fedko opened the scoring with a ground-rule double in the third to score Jenkins. Omaha immediately responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Storm Chasers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, but the Saints came back in the following half inning with a pair of runs.
Sabato had an RBI double to plate Matt Wallner. Sabato later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Ross.
The teams play at 12:05 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.
