OXFORD — Coach Chris Beard is not leaving Ole Miss basketball for familiar territory.
Beard, who has been the coach at Ole Miss for two seasons, is not taking a job coaching at Texas A&M, On3 reported Wednesday. The opening in College Station was created when Buzz Williams left to become coach at Maryland.
Beard has coached in some capacity for seven different schools in Texas, and he was reportedly a candidate for the job.
The Rebels have had tremendous success under Beard. He inherited a 12-win team and led Ole Miss to a 20-12 record in 2023-24. This season, Beard led Ole Miss to a No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament. Ole Miss reached the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history.
Beard's buyout for leaving is $4.5 million. It drops to $3.5 million on April 12. He is making $5 million annually, but will get a payment bump, per On3. Ole Miss was the first college to hire Beard after he was charged with third-degree felony for allegedly choking his then-fiancé. The charges were later dropped.
Beard, 52, has not historically stayed in one place very long. He coached at Fort Scott Community College (1999-200), Seminole State Junior College (2000-01), McMurry (2012-13), Angelo State (2013-15), Little Rock (2015-16), Texas Tech (2016-21) and Texas (2021-23). The longest tenure in that stretch was at Texas Tech. Beard was the coach of the Red Raiders for five seasons and led them to a Final Four in 2019.

Shortly after the news that Beard would not leave for Texas A&M circulated, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter shared a social media post hinting at Beard's future at Ole Miss.
Carter put out a picture on X of where he posed with Beard during Ole Miss' NCAA tournament run. Carter captioned the image "Why stop now?"
