Former Texas Longhorns basketball coach Chris Beard will not be the next head of basketball at Texas A&M. Despite reported contact from Aggies athletic director Trev Alberts and a host of online Aggies fans begging, Beard is expected to stay at Ole Miss.
The Aggies lost coach Buzz Williams earlier this week when he left College Station to take the job at Maryland. Many Aggies fans saw Beard as the answer, despite his checkered past or the fact he has University of Texas ties.
The Rebels have offered a boost in Beard's salary and NIL budget in Oxford.
Beard was hired by Texas on April 1, 2021 and led the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. In 2022, Beard and Texas started 7-1. But the UT grad was fired on Jan. 5, 2023 after an arrest for domestic abuse in December.
Beard was arrested on a third-degree felony assault against a family member for strangulation. According to the police report, Beard's fiancée Randi Trew said Beard, "choked me, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts," consistent with bite marks on her arm and cuts on her face and leg. The University suspended Beard without pay.
His fiancée recanted her story, saying Beard acted in self-defense and that he never strangled her. "As Chris' fiancé and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening. Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that. I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted." Trew's story change didn't prevent Texas from firing Beard.
On February 15, Travis County District Attorney José Garza announced that based on case evidence and Trew's wishes, he would not prosecute. Beard was named head coach of the University of Mississippi two months later.
Beard has been successful in Oxford. In two seasons, Beard has steered Ole Miss to a 44–24 record and a Sweet 16 appearance this season.
Many A&M fans fans openly rooted for Beard to be the next coach in Aggieland. Now, Alberts and the Aggies administration will have to go back to the drawing board.
