Alex Hernandez recorded an outfield assist in the 5th inning to save a run | GTAA
In their first regional final since 2019, #2 Georgia Tech Baseball fell to Oklahoma 12-8, forcing a winner take all game on Monday to advance to Super Regionals.
After going down 8-2 in the third inning, Oklahoma countered with eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-8 lead and never looked back holding Tech scoreless the rest of the way.
Things started really well for Tech after Carson Kerce walked on four pitches and Burress drove him in with his 15th home run of the season and 59th of his career.
After Oklahoma tied it on a Brendan Brock 2-run home run, Tech scored five in the third inning, which included Alex Hernandez’s fourth home run of the weekend.
Then the bottom of the fourth happened. It was the classic Tech baseball postseason blunder inning. Even 50 wins and the best offense in the BBCOR era couldn’t stop the immovable force that is a total collapse by Tech’s pitching in the NCAA Tournament when it matters most.
Jackson Blakely and Caden Gaudette sadly were the victims of the eternal curse, allowing seven earned runs in the fourth inning before an out was recorded. Cooper Underwood came in and eventually settled things down (he did allow one run on a solo homer).
Tech’s bats stayed cold and Oklahoma managed to add five more between the 7th and 8th innings when they got to the depths of Tech’s bullpen and put the game out of hand.
How It Happened
T1: Kerce walk, Burress 2-run homer for 2-0 lead. Advincula hit and Cameron Johnson was pulled for Jackson Cleveland. Johnson was showing no control, starting with six straight balls. Hernandez hit into double play to end inning.
B1: 1-2-3 inning
T2: 1-2-3 inning. Only one hard hit foul between Schmidt, Brosius, and Baker.
B2: 2-run homer by Brendan Brock to tie it at 2-2. Dasan Harris followed up with his 6th double of the year. Blakely did a great job settling down and getting the next two guys out on a strikeout and pop up to third base.
T3: Kerce walk, Advincula single, and Lackey hit by pitch to load the bases. Kerce scores on wild pitch for 3-2 GT lead. Zuckerman singles the rest of the runners home for 5-2 lead. Hernandez 2-run homer for 7-2 lead. Schmidt reaches on fielding error. Brosius single advances Schmidt to third. Schmidt caught stealing second (first time caught stealing all year in five tries)
B3: Zuckerman incredible catch most of the way down the left field line on a pop out by Jason Walk. Gambill arguably robbed of an RBI single because of a pitch clock violation on Blakely, which ended up extending the at bat and he struck out Gambill.
T4: Kerce reached on fly ball dropped by short stop. Burress infield single. Gavyn Jones subs in to pitch before Advincula drives in Kerce on a sac fly to left, 8-2 GT.
B4: Brock solo homer to center on first pitch of AB, true ambush swing, 8-3 GT. Harris hit by pitch. Dayton Tockey hits into shift, but Kerce can’t handle ball on diving effort, Harris advances to third with no one covering the bag. Caden Gaudette comes in to pitch. Both Kyle Branch and Jason Walk get RBI singles to make it 8-5 GT with no outs still. Oklahoma loads the bases for Deitan Lachance who hits a grand slam to right to take the lead 9-8 Oklahoma. Cooper Underwood in to pitch. Gets an out before allowing a solo homer to Trey Gambill for 10-8 Oklahoma.
T5: Brosius gets on via catcher’s interference, but that’s it.
B5: Underwood walks the Dayton Tockey and is replaced by Brett Barfield. Tockey to second on a wild pitch, Jason Walk gets a single and Tockey is thrown out at the plate by Alex Hernandez.
T6: Kerce leadoff walk and Burress single before L.J. Mercurius comes in to pitch and gets out of the inning.
B6: Shadek survives a double by Willits and doesn’t allow a run.
T7: Brosius walks with two outs. Caleb Daniel pinch hits for Will Baker, lines out to second base.
B7: First two batters get on and are bunted over into scoring position for Jason Walk. Walk grounds out to third and drives in a run, 11-8 Oklahoma.
T8: Kerce leadoff single, gets to third on wild pitch and groundout. Lackey walks after being down 0-2. Zuckerman strikes out in bad at bat.
B8: Two singles to start before Kayden Campbell comes in to pitch. He only faces one batter (sacrifice bunt). Caden Spivey comes in and allows two more runs for 13-8 Oklahoma. After a walk, runners get to scoring position on a walk and one is driven in by Kyle Branch for 14-8 Oklahoma. Adam McKelvey comes in and immediately allows an RBI single for 15-8 Oklahoma.
