Ohio State, here comes Landon Thiel.
The Jackson High School product and Buckeyes signee did not get selected during the two-day MLB Draft, which concluded Sunday, July 12.
MLB.com had Thiel as the 182nd-ranked prospect entering the draft even after the 6-foot-7 lefty underwent Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow last month.
The 18-year-old Thiel was trying to become the first Stark County product drafted straight out of high school since 2015, when Canton South's D.J. Wilson was selected in the fourth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jackson did have a player selected Sunday. Catcher Garrett Wright, a 2023 Jackson grad, was picked in the eighth round, 229th overall, by the Los Angeles Angels.
Thiel exploded as a prospect over the past year as he transformed his body and improved his velocity. His weight jumped from 205 pounds to 230. His fastball jumped from the 86-89 mile-per-hour range to 91-93 while topping out around 95.
As a Jackson senior, Thiel went 6-0 with a 0.95 ERA, leading the Polar Bears to a share of the Federal League championship and a regional appearance. He fanned a county-high 101 batters in 44 innings. Opponents batted .079 off of him. He earned pitcher of the year for the Federal League and Northeast Ohio Division I and was First Team All-Ohio.
Thiel finished his four-year varsity career with a Jackson-record 295 strikeouts, a 24-3 record and a 1.39 ERA.
Thiel experienced stiffness and pain in his left forearm as the season progressed. An MRI after Jackson's district championship revealed a UCL tear. Minnesota Twins team physician Christopher Camp performed reconstruction surgery on Thiel at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis on June 16.
The surgery was successful. Thiel is expected to return to the mound in about 10 months. He'll do it as a collegian.
